What foods to avoid when following a ketogenic diet

Before we discuss the foods to avoid whilst following the ketogenic diet we need to clarify and understand what ketogenic is firstly.  In simplistic terms it’s a high-fat and adequate protein eating plan very low in carbohydrates. This diet lets your body burn fats instead of carbohydrates.

Eating free range is best

It is recommended to  always eat grass-fed and free ranging animal meat such as; beef, lamb, goat or pork.  If meat is not your thing then seafood is great, but avoid farmed fish; these definitely are Ketogenic Diet Foods to Avoid as farmed fish may contain PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl is an organic chlorine compound).

Vegetables and fruit are great; especially one’s have that been organically grown. At times they do cost most than the mass produced and chemically treated farmed vegetables. In the long run are so much healthier for you and they are way tastier.


Avoid those grains

As tasty as they are you cannot have these; wheat, rye, oats, corn, barley or rice to name a few. It’s simple; if it’s a grain avoid it completely!  If you crave grains in the beginning there are some good alternatives such as almonds, cauliflower rice or even baked sweet potato fries.


If it’s processed then don’t eat it

Avoid all food types that have been processed   as they often contain elements like MSG, gelatines, artificial sweeteners and loads of refined fats e.g. canola, soybean, grapeseed, etc.  Simple rule here is, they are Ketogenic Diet Foods to Avoid.

Many products today are tinned as they are convenient and have long shelf lives. Try avoiding these completely and rather select for fresh produce or finding something else to use. The internet is a great resource and can help you find foods to enjoy or avoid really quickly.

Liquid and more liquid

In today’s world just about every product we consume has some form of artificial additive into it to prolong its shelf live. So the best thing to do here is find the things that have no carbohydrates and as little additives or sugar in it.

Stick to plain water and at all cost avoids the bottled flavoured ones. Just plain filtered water is perfect and you certainly can’t over indulge with water. Also avoid all forms of alcohol.
